Blog Project Week 10: Complex
What could be more daunting for a weekly blog project than pulling a word whose definition is "not simple"?
Part of what made this selection challenging was that there were so many different ways to go. I could photograph a complicated piece of machinery or one of my detailed knitting patterns.
While I was in the basement poking around I stumbled across my father's collection of large glasses and beer steins from my parents years living in Germany when my father was in the army. Among all the glass and metal was this handcrafted stein with such incredible detail, bringing the ships and ocean waves to life.
But it got even funnier when I discovered that one of my friends had the exact same stein in their collection, so I borrowed it so I could show how detailed they are all the way around. Same design, same little seagulls flying around the clouds -- each little indent and carving to show the same scene on these two mugs made by the same company that have been separated for 37 years. All on an object whose main purpose is to transport beer from tap to ones mouth.
They are complex, detailed, and something I could never recreate. Yet in their similarity you can see the slight difference from line to line and the overall color. A complex piece of art.
